How to register, and why
If we are going to pay tribute to 120 departing friends of ours, we will need your help. Here are directions for writing a farewell; please email me if you have questions.
1. Click this link and fill out the registration form. Please register with your real name as your username. Your account won't last very long if you don't. As journalists, we know that First Amendment rights come with responsibilities. So if you are going to write a tribute on this website, it's only fair that you identify yourself.
2. Check your email for a message that begins, "Account details for ..." Take note of your new password and then click the link in the email (or just come back to this page) to log in.
3. Click this link to post a story once you're registered. Give it a headline in the Title field and write it up in the Body field. Two returns makes a paragraph break. If you're handy with HTML, you can insert your own HTML tags.
4. When you're done, click "Save" (or "Preview" to give it the once-over before clicking "Save"). You'll get a page with the message that your message "has been created." I'll get a notification that new content has been submitted, and will review it before posting.
Commenting on existing farewells
To comment on a farewell, click the "Add new comment" link at the bottom of the article. I'd appreciate it if you identified yourself. All content written for this site will be reviewed by me before it appears here.
Guidelines for posting
Remember, the purpose of this site is mainly twofold:
1. Saying farewell to a Star employee who was let go on June 16, 2008
2. A Star employee saying farewell
I don't have any other real guidelines for comments except the usual (no personal attacks, F-bombs, etc.), and no comments suggesting people who should have been fired instead. We aren't going to play the lifeboat game here.
Bill O'Reilly once famously said, "This thing sucks!" And it's true. Getting laid off is a terrible way to go, in any line of work. June 16 was a horrible day in the life of this newspaper. We shouldn't have to have this website. But now that we do, let's use it for good -- as a tangible way of helping our departing colleagues through a painful transition time.
